Not only motorways

Like Romania, Bulgaria applies its e-vignette to the entire national road network outside built-up areas. If you drive on a magistrala or any classified national road between towns, you need one.

This surprises drivers coming from countries where vignettes apply only to autobahn-style motorways.

Prices for cars (2026)

Typical passenger car rates:

  • 1 day: about 5 €
  • 7 days: about 7 €
  • 1 month: about 15 €
  • 1 year: about 50 €

Bulgaria remains one of the cheapest vignette countries in the EU. Prices are low but enforcement is active.

How it works

Purchase online at bgtoll.bg or through authorised resellers. The vignette links to your plate number. There is no sticker.

Cameras cover major entry points from Romania (Ruse, Giurgiu corridor), Greece, Turkey, and North Macedonia. Do not wait until the first petrol station — buy before the border if possible.

Weekend and Black Sea routes

Summer traffic to Burgas and Varna spikes from June to August. Queues at toll purchase kiosks near the border are common. An online purchase with a PDF receipt avoids the delay.

If you transit Bulgaria in under 24 hours on national roads, the 1-day vignette is enough. For a week at the coast, the 7-day product is the obvious choice.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles need their own vignette at motorcycle rates — do not assume exemption.

Fines

Driving without a valid e-vignette triggers a fine of about 150 € plus the cost of the vignette. EU cross-border enforcement applies for registered vehicles from other member states.

Practical tip

Bulgarian Cyrillic plates and some older EU formats confuse manual entry. Double-check every character when buying online. Letter O vs digit 0 is the most frequent typo for foreign buyers.
