Rovinieta: Romania's road tax for foreign drivers
Romania requires a vignette for all national roads, not just motorways. Here is what rovinieta covers and the peço bridge trap.
Beyond motorways
Romania is one of two EU countries (along with Bulgaria) where the vignette — called rovinieta — is required on all national roads outside urban areas, not only motorways.
If you drive on any DN (drum național) road in Romania, you need one.
Prices for cars
Rovinieta 2026 for passenger cars:
- 1 day: about 3.5 €
- 7 days: about 5 €
- 30 days: about 14 €
- 60 days: about 25 €
- 12 months: about 77 €
Prices are low compared to most EU vignettes.
The Cernavodă bridge
The A2 motorway from Bucharest to Constanța crosses the Danube at Cernavodă. The bridge has a separate toll, called taxa de pod. Your rovinieta does not cover it.
You pay the bridge toll either at the booth or online on the CNAIR site. It is small (about 3 €) but often forgotten by tourists.
Motorcycles
Motorcycles are currently exempt from rovinieta.
Enforcement
Romania uses automated camera enforcement on all rovinieta-covered roads. Fines are sent by post to the registered address of the vehicle. For foreign drivers the fine arrives through EU cross-border enforcement.
