Who needs a Czech motorway vignette?

Cars and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 t need a dálniční známka on Czech motorways and selected expressways. Motorcycles and trailers are exempt.

The vignette is digital since 2021 — linked to plate and country of registration. Cameras enforce across the network.

Where is the vignette required?

On signed motorways (dálnice) and expressways (rychlostní silnice) in the eDalnice system — including most of the D0 Prague ring except short toll-free segments.

Ordinary roads without motorway signs do not require a vignette. When in doubt, look for the motorway symbol on green signs.

Digital dálniční známka

No windshield sticker — your plate is registered in the national database for the period purchased (1 day, 10 days, 1 month, or 1 year).

Card payments activate immediately unless you choose a future start date (up to three months ahead on the official system).

Motorcycles and trailers

Motorcycles, trikes, and trailers do not need a Czech vignette. If you drive a car, you still need one even when towing a light trailer under 3.5 t combined.

Do not claim exemptions you are not entitled to — misuse can lead to higher penalties than a missing standard vignette.

Eco and alternative-fuel rates

Natural gas / biomethane cars and eligible plug-in hybrids can use reduced tariffs on eDalnice — select the matching fuel type at checkout.

Fully electric and hydrogen vehicles may qualify for exemption but must register with the Czech authority; that process is separate from buying a standard vignette here.

How to buy your Czech vignette online

Through AllVignette:

  1. Choose vehicle type (standard, CNG, or eco hybrid if applicable).
  2. Enter plate and pick period plus start date.
  3. Pay by card.
  4. Keep the confirmation email until you verify at edalnice.cz.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a motorcycle needs the same vignette as a car.
  • Entering the D0 ring or another motorway before the vignette start time.
  • Wrong plate or country code at purchase.
  • Choosing standard tariff when your car qualifies for CNG/eco — or the reverse.

Frequently asked questions

Do motorcycles need a Czech vignette?

No. Motorcycles, trikes, and trailers are exempt from the Czech vignette requirement. If you're riding a motorcycle through Czechia, you do not need to buy anything.

What is the fine for driving without a Czech vignette?

Fines can reach up to ~CZK 20,000 (≈€820). Misuse of exemptions (e.g., driving an unregistered electric vehicle on a claimed exemption) can trigger higher penalties up to €6,900.

Is the Czech vignette fully digital?

Yes, since 2021. No physical sticker — the vignette is linked to your license plate and country of registration. Enforcement is camera-based across the motorway network.

How fast does the vignette activate?

If you pay by card, the vignette is valid immediately upon payment confirmation. You can also choose a future start date (up to 3 months in advance).

Do electric vehicles pay less?

Yes. Fully electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles are exempt but must register for an exemption with the Czech authority. Natural gas and plug-in hybrids get reduced rates.

Does the Czech vignette cover the city bypass around Prague?

Most of the D0 (Prague Ring) requires a vignette. A few short sections near the city are toll-free. Use official route signs — if a "motorway" or "expressway" symbol is shown, the vignette is required.
