Slovenia 2A vs 2B: which category is your SUV?
Slovenia splits passenger vehicles into two categories by height and axles. Pick the wrong one and risk a fine up to 800 €.
The height rule
Slovenia splits vehicles under 3.5 t into two categories, 2A and 2B. The split is based on height at the front axle:
- 2A: up to and including 1.30 m
- 2B: above 1.30 m
Most regular cars fall into 2A. Many SUVs, crossovers and all camper vans are 2B.
Why it matters
Category 2B prices are roughly double those of 2A. A week in 2A costs about 16 €, a week in 2B is about 32 €.
If the automated camera detects your vehicle as 2B but you bought a 2A vignette, you owe the difference plus a penalty. Fines for completely missing vignettes in Slovenia go up to 800 €.
How to check your height
Look at your vehicle registration certificate. The manufacturer declared height is listed there. Measure from the ground to the top of the bodywork at the front axle.
Keep in mind roof rails, roof boxes and extras usually do not count because the rule measures the body itself, not the load.
Motorcycles
Motorcycles form their own lighter category (2A motorcycle) with lower prices.
Where to find the right category
When buying online, always double-check the category on the operator page (evinjeta.dars.si). A good reseller will ask you before issuing.
