Switzerland: why there is only an annual vignette
The Swiss sticker costs 40 CHF regardless of whether you visit for a day or a year. Here is how to plan around it.
The Swiss peculiarity
Switzerland is the only country in Europe that has a single vignette option: an annual one. Whether you drive for half a day or for a full year, the price is the same — 40 CHF (roughly 41 €).
Sticker or digital
Until 2023 the vignette existed only as a physical sticker for the windscreen. Since 2023 a digital version is available, linked to the license plate.
The sticker must be placed on the windshield on the passenger side or at the top centre, clearly visible.
What it covers
The vignette gives access to Swiss motorways (autobahn) and semi-motorways. It does not cover some sections where an extra charge applies, such as the Great St. Bernard tunnel or the Munt la Schera tunnel.
When the detour makes sense
If you plan only a short transit through Switzerland, check whether you can take non-motorway roads instead. Sometimes the scenic routes are both more beautiful and more economical for a one-day trip.
Commercial vehicles
Anything over 3.5 tonnes uses the LSVA electronic toll system instead. The vignette does not apply.
