What is e-známka

Slovakia replaced physical stickers with the electronic e-známka in 2016. Your license plate is registered in the national database for the period you pay. Cameras on every tolled section check it automatically.

The system covers motorways (diaľnice) and expressways (rýchlostné cesty) for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

Validity periods and prices

For passenger cars in 2026:

  • 1 day: about 8.10 €
  • 10 days: about 10.80 €
  • 30 days: about 17.10 €
  • 365 days: about 90 €

Motorcycles pay lower rates. Prices are published in EUR on eznamka.sk.

Immediate activation

Unlike Austria's 18-day rule for some products bought directly from the operator, Slovak e-známka products sold through authorised channels typically activate on the start date you choose — including same-day if you buy before entering.

Pick the start date to match your actual motorway entry, not your hotel check-in two days earlier in Bratislava's old town (where you may not need a vignette at all).

Bratislava and city driving

Driving within Bratislava on non-motorway roads does not require a vignette. You only need one when you enter the tolled network — for example heading toward Košice on the D1 or crossing toward Hungary on the D2.

Many tourists buy a vignette on arrival day but only use motorways on day three. That wastes validity. Plan the start date carefully.

Trailers and categories

A standard car towing a light trailer under 3.5 t combined uses one car vignette. Heavier combinations move to a higher toll category.

Fines

Slovakia enforces strictly. Missing vignette fines start around 150 € and rise if unpaid. Foreign plates are checked the same as domestic ones through EU data exchange.

Quick checklist

  • Confirm your route uses tolled sections (D1, D2, R1, etc.)
  • Enter plate exactly as on the registration document
  • Save PDF confirmation and note the validity window
  • Re-check on eznamka.sk before your return motorway leg
