Who needs an Austrian vignette?

Every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes using Austrian motorways (Autobahn) or expressways (Schnellstraße) needs a valid vignette — including short transit trips.

This covers cars, motorcycles, camper vans under 3.5 t, and the towing vehicle when pulling a trailer (the trailer itself does not need a separate Austrian vignette). Heavier commercial vehicles use the GO-Box distance toll system instead.

Where is the Austria vignette required?

The vignette is required on the national motorway and expressway network operated by ASFINAG — marked with Autobahn or Schnellstraße signs.

It does not replace tolls on special routes such as the Brenner motorway (A13), Arlberg tunnel (S16), Karawanken, Tauern, or Gleinalm — those are paid separately at barriers.

Digital vignette vs windshield sticker

Since 2018 Austria offers a digital e-vignette linked to your license plate — no sticker on the glass. You can buy it online before travel and receive email confirmation.

Physical stickers are still sold at border points and petrol stations. For tourists, digital is usually faster: no placement errors and instant activation for short-term products.

The 18-day rule (2-month and annual products)

When you buy a 2-month or annual digital vignette directly from ASFINAG as a private customer, EU law gives you a 14-day withdrawal period plus processing — validity often starts only after 18 days.

The 1-day and 10-day digital vignettes activate immediately. If you need to drive within the next two weeks on a longer pass, choose a short-term product or confirm activation timing before you travel.

Section tolls not included

Several high-cost alpine routes are excluded from the standard vignette: Brenner Pass (A13), Arlberg tunnel (S16), Karawanken tunnel, Tauern motorway (A10), and others.

You pay these at toll stations or via video toll where available. Plan extra budget if your route crosses the Brenner or other special toll sections.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the Brenner or tunnel tolls are included in the standard vignette.
  • Buying a 2-month or annual pass and driving before the 18-day waiting period ends (ASFINAG direct sales).
  • Entering a wrong license plate — the vignette is tied to the plate number.
  • Forgetting that cameras check plates automatically — fines start around €120 substitute toll.

AllVignette is an independent service that purchases the official Austria e-vignette on your behalf. We are not a national toll operator and are not affiliated with the official authority. Our service fee is included in the displayed price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a vignette in Austria?

Yes. Every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes using Austrian motorways (Autobahn) or expressways (Schnellstraße) must have a valid vignette. This includes transit trips — even passing through for 20 minutes requires one.

What is the fine for driving without a vignette in Austria?

The substitute toll is €120, payable on the spot. If not paid, penalties can escalate up to €3,000. Automatic cameras scan license plates, so getting caught is essentially guaranteed.

How fast does the digital vignette activate?

The 1-day and 10-day digital vignettes activate immediately after purchase. Unlike the 2-month and annual versions (which have an 18-day legal waiting period when bought directly from ASFINAG), short-term vignettes are usable right away.

Does my vignette cover the Brenner Pass or Arlberg Tunnel?

No. Several special routes require additional tolls: Brenner Pass (A13), Arlberg Tunnel (S16), Karawanken Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Pyhrn Autobahn. These are paid separately at toll stations. The regular vignette covers the rest of the network.

Can I use the vignette if I change my license plate?

No. The digital vignette is linked to a specific license plate number. If you change plates (new car, new registration), you need to purchase a new vignette. Store your confirmation email — you may need it to claim a partial refund from ASFINAG in case of a total loss.

Do motorcycles need an Austrian vignette?

Yes. Motorcycles need their own vignette (at a reduced rate). The digital version is linked to the plate, so it works the same way as for cars.
