Switzerland vignette guides
Annual pass only — no short-term motorway vignette. Great St Bernard tunnel is separate; Gotthard motorway included.
Who needs a Swiss motorway vignette?
Cars, vans, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t using Swiss national-road motorways need the annual vignette (car or motorcycle tariff).
Each trailer requires its own vignette even when towed. Heavy goods vehicles use the HVF distance toll — not sold here.
Where is the vignette required?
On Swiss national-road motorways and some motorway-like routes marked for vignette — urban bypasses signed as motorways included.
Cantonal roads without motorway status are free. Missing vignette fines are severe and enforced at borders and cameras.
Annual only — CHF 40
Switzerland sells no 1-day or 10-day motorway vignette — only the annual pass (CHF 40 official price for cars).
Validity runs 14 months from your chosen start date (e.g. Dec 2025 purchase can cover through Feb 2027 depending on rules shown at checkout).
Digital e-vignette vs sticker
You may use the digital e-vignette on your plate or the traditional windshield sticker — both fulfil the same motorway obligation.
Digital is ideal for foreign plates and rental cars; stickers must be correctly affixed without obstruction.
Gotthard included; Great St Bernard extra
Standard motorway vignette includes the Gotthard road tunnel on the motorway network — not separate like Karawanken in Slovenia.
Great St Bernard tunnel and other major alpine tunnels often have their own toll — budget separately for those routes.

Frequently asked questions
Is there only an annual Swiss vignette?
Yes. Switzerland is the only European country that does not offer daily or monthly vignettes. Even if you're transiting for an hour, you must buy the full annual vignette at CHF 40.
How long is the Swiss vignette valid?
The annual vignette is valid for 14 months — from December 1 of the previous year through January 31 of the following year. So a 2026 vignette bought in December 2025 is usable until 31 January 2027.
What's the fine for driving without a Swiss vignette?
CHF 200 fine, plus you still have to buy the vignette (CHF 40) — total CHF 240. Swiss enforcement is strict, especially at border crossings.
Does the Swiss vignette cover the Gotthard Tunnel?
The Gotthard Road Tunnel (A2) is covered by the vignette — no extra charge. But the Great St. Bernard Tunnel (to Italy) has a separate toll (~CHF 30 one-way).
Can I use the Swiss vignette with a trailer or motorcycle?
Both need their own vignette. Motorcycles pay CHF 40 (same as cars), trailers pay CHF 40 separately from the towing vehicle. The digital e-vignette is linked to the specific license plate number.
What if I switch license plates?
The e-vignette follows the plate, not the vehicle. If you have an interchangeable (wechselnummer) plate used on multiple vehicles, the vignette applies to all of them. If you replace your plate entirely, you need a new vignette.
