Who needs a Hungarian e-Matrica?

Every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes (category D1) using Hungarian motorways and expressways needs a valid e-Matrica — including transit. The system is fully digital and linked to your license plate.

Heavier combinations or certain trailers may fall under category D2 with higher tariffs. There is no physical sticker — enforcement uses nationwide ANPR cameras.

Where is the e-Matrica required?

On the national tolled motorway and expressway network operated under Nemzeti Útdíj — marked as motorways (M-roads) and main expressways where toll applies.

City streets and most secondary roads are free. If your GPS enters a tolled M-road, you need coverage before the first camera — not after.

How the e-Matrica system works

Purchase registers your plate in the central database for the validity period you choose (1 day, 10 days, 1 month, or 1 year for national products).

You receive email confirmation from AllVignette once the official e-Matrica is active. Keep it as proof alongside operator check tools at ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu.

National vs county (megyei) vignettes

Hungary also sells cheaper county vignettes if you only drive within one region. For international transit or multi-county routes, the national D1 vignette is required.

Buying the wrong scope is a common mistake — if you leave the county without upgrading, cameras will flag your plate.

60-minute grace period

If you enter a tolled section without a vignette, you have 60 minutes to purchase an e-Matrica and avoid a fine — useful if you forgot at the border.

After 60 minutes, automated enforcement applies. Fines start around HUF 27,790 (≈€73) and can escalate if unpaid.

How to buy your Hungary e-Matrica online

Order through AllVignette in a few minutes:

  1. Enter your license plate carefully (O vs 0, I vs 1).
  2. Choose period and start date.
  3. Pay securely by card.
  4. Receive email confirmation when the e-Matrica is registered.

Common mistakes

  • Typo in the license plate — the most frequent cause of "invalid" status.
  • Buying a county vignette but driving into another county.
  • Assuming motorcycles never need a vignette — D1 covers them on tolled roads.
  • Waiting more than 60 minutes after entering the motorway without buying.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an e-matrica for Hungarian motorways?

Yes. All vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (category D1) need a valid e-matrica for motorways and expressways. Hungary uses a fully digital system — no physical sticker. Your license plate is registered in a central database.

What happens if I drive without an e-matrica in Hungary?

Base penalty: HUF 27,790 (≈€73). If unpaid for over 60 days, it escalates to HUF 95,730 (≈€250). Multiple cameras across the motorway can each trigger a separate fine, so the total can grow quickly.

Are motorcycles exempt in Hungary?

Motorcycles are charged under the D1 category but some routes waive them in practice. The national D1 vignette covers them; there is no separate motorcycle category.

How long is the 10-day vignette valid?

The weekly (10-day) vignette is valid from the start date you choose plus 9 more calendar days, ending at 23:59 on the 10th day.

Is there a grace period if I forget to buy the vignette?

Yes — you have 60 minutes after entering the motorway to purchase an e-matrica and avoid a fine. After 60 minutes, automatic cameras trigger penalties.

Does the vignette cover all Hungarian motorways?

The national D1 vignette covers every tolled motorway in Hungary. There are also cheaper county-level (megye) vignettes if you only travel within one region — but for transit trips, the national version is required.
